The world is putting an ever growing demand on personal time, along with an ever-ballooning cost for recreation that seems to never end. We respect that you have busy personal lives as a recreational skater, so we do not require meetings, attendance or board positions. Roller Derby

What is Roller Derby?

Roller derby is a contact sport played by two teams of five members roller skating counter-clockwise around a track. Game play consists of a series of short match-ups (jams) in which both teams designate a jammer (who wears a star on the helmet).

The jammer scores points by lapping members of the opposing team. The teams attempt to hinder the opposing jammer while assisting their own jammer—in effect, playing both offense and defense simultaneously.

What ages play Roller Derby?

Youth ages 6-11 typically play positional blocking (Think flag football) as in no contact, Juniors (Junior Roller Derby Association JRDA) range from 12 to 17 years of age and play the same kind of derby as their adult counter parts.

Adult 18+ (Womens Flat Track Derby Association WFTDA & Mens Roller Derby Association MRDA) Most adults fall into a 20-35 age range with many age specific team (Over 40, Over 50, etc) being common. As stated many older players with ages in the 60's & 70's are not unheard of.

Is Roller Derby Safe for me or my youth/Junior to participate in?

Yes, within reason.

Like all sports the element of danger is partly what makes them so fun and there is always potential to become injured. The goal with any sport is doing your best to minimize those risk, such as proper sport specific safety gear, gear that is not damaged or broken, proper level of participating engagement based on individual skill level, appropriately trained staff such as concussion protocols and knowing when and how to escalate to emergency services.

No one can plan for or safe guard against all risk, best practices work to lessen the impact and minimize the rate or potential of them. We take safety very seriously, a sport is not learned in a day and encourage a slow approach to Derby.

I have a medical condition, will that stop me from playing?

If you have a known medical issue, we require a medical professionals assessment in writing clearing you to participate in Roller Derby. We are not medical professionals and will always defer to their expert advise/opinion in all health matters.

This includes suffering a concussion before being cleared to participate again.

Can I play a certain position (Jammer, Pivot, Blocker)?

Sort of... while derby players definitely have their own preferred positions, all players learn all roles. This helps the skater to learn all aspects of the game and allow for contingencies and backup for positions. We of course will try to have people primarily perform their preferred position as a general rule of play.

I want to go slow and see if it is even right for me without buying all of the gear, is there an option for me?

YES!

You (Your Youth/Junior) can come to any practice of the Little Tator's, 12-17 Team, or Skate Club and watch (Please contact us first by our contact us page).

If you feel like you want to try and skate (Signed Waiver Required) we can loan rental skates and show some basic skills (Similar to our age appropriate Lessons) for a one time fee of $10 (approx. 30 Minutes of skating).
